Are Zinsco and Federal Pacific Panels Outdated?

!±8± Are Zinsco and Federal Pacific Panels Outdated?

With the progression of technology over the past two decades people depend on electric now more then ever. Most homes have modern appliances such as a dishwasher, refrigerator, electric stove and modern conveniences that include multiple computers, cell phones, game systems, alarm clocks etc all using electricity.

Houses built before 1970 generally make use of two types of electrical systems. Each system only allows for up to 60 amps of electrical use within the home today it is recommended that homes be equipped for 150 amps.

The fuse box is still in many homes and presents many risks to residents within the home. Not only are fuse boxes unable to handle the demands of modern electrical usage forcing fuses to "pop"; they are also at risk of catching fire because more often than not the wrong types of fuses are used to replace older ones. By using a fuse capable 30amps in a box that takes 15amp fuses the wiring is not able to handle that much power or heat.

The other commonly used system was a Split-bus panel. This system has small breakers that can be turned on and off as needed. The problem with these systems is that the mini-breakers will melt and burn causing an extreme fire hazard.

As time went on, homes started being built with Zinsco and Federal panels. Home inspectors, however, have concluded that the breakers can melt and fail to trip leaving families vulnerable to electrical shock and fires. It is extremely important to never open these panels. Instead, consult a local electrician. In Atlanta, contact an electrical contractor licensed in Atlanta. In NJ, you'd find someone local as well. In 2005 a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of New Jersey residents against Federal Pacific Electric Company. The suit claimed that Federal Pacific Electric distributed products that were not tested to meet UL standards. The suit was settled entitling New Jersey residents who owned or replaced the panels to monetary damages.

Experts agree that while systems can seem to function for years, over time they can be affected by one short circuit and be a hazard to the homes occupants and must be replaced as they no longer function properly. While one might argue the cost of upgrading their current electrical system to today's standards it is recommended to consult a local electrician to minimize risks of an outdated system. For the safety of loved ones and piece of mind it is a small price to pay.
